My Blood Is Blue
Was hoping we wouldn’t have to open up this topic again any time soon but news has come out this morning that tragically, Christian Atsu‘s body has been found in Turkey and it has been confirmed he has passed away. RIP Christian. Taken far far too young.
Ham
Very sad, especially after the false reports that he'd been found safe.
RDCW
How awful, especially given the misinformation. His family must be devastated.

Holymoly
John Motson. Not my favourite but modern day commentators could take a leaf out of his book regarding objective, unbiased commentary.
Mark Kelly
Yes , shame to see Motty go , my favourite by a long way and I always believed he had a soft spot for us, unlike Tyler .

east lower
Very sad news indeed, he and Barry Davies were the first commentators I remember. A pioneer of the incorporation of statistical data within his commentaries. RIP
xceleryx
Sad news indeed. Quite a distinguishable voice that was a big part of my early interest in football, especially through playing the FIFA games.
Popular Post Blue Moon
The Wit & Wisdom of John Motson, Football Commentator Extraordinaire, sad to see him go: “He’s got the taste of Wembley in his nostrils.” “And I suppose Spurs are nearer to being out of the FA Cup now than any other time since the first half of this season, when they weren’t ever in it anyway.” "Whether that was a penalty or not, the referee thought otherwise." “Northern Ireland are ten minutes away from their finest victory. There’s 15 minutes to go here.” “It’s so different from the scenes in 1872, at the Cup Final none of us can remember.” "The World Cup is a truly international event." “That shot might not have been as good as it might have been.” “You couldn’t count the number of moves Alan Ball made… I counted four, and possibly five.” “The referee is wearing the same yellow-coloured top as the Slovakian goalkeeper. I’d have thought the UEFA official would have spotted that – but perhaps he’s been deafened by the noise of this crowd.” "And Seaman, just like a falling oak, manages to change direction." "For those of you watching in black and white, Spurs are in the all-yellow strip." “None of the players are wearing earrings. Kjeldberg, with his contact lenses, is the closest we can get.” “In a sense it’s a one-man show… except there are two men involved, Hartson and Berkovic, and a third man, the goalkeeper.” “Owen scores and breaks Lineker’s competitive scoring record. Although, this being a friendly it doesn’t actually count, so he hasn’t quite done it yet.” "The Brazilian supporters are wearing yellow shirts - it’s a fabulous kaleidoscope of colour." "It’s Arsenal 0, Everton 1, and the longer it stays like that, the more you’ve got to fancy Everton." “Just look at Keegan’s face, he’s got a look of resignation… I don’t mean, of course, about his managerial position, but rather about today’s game.” “Gary Lineker has now scored 37 goals. That is precisely twice as many as last year.” “The unexpected is always likely to happen.” "Middlesbrough are withdrawing Maccarone the Italian, Nemeth the Slovakian, and Stockdale... the right-back." “The game is balanced in Arsenal’s favour.” Edited February 23, 2023 by Blue Moon
chrisb
Like many on here I suspect, he was one of the first voices we heard when watching football on the TV. Remember seeing him on TV years ago when he was pitch side, absolutely covered in snow and still talking! RIP John Motson, the man who put sheep skin coats firmly on the map! My Blood Is Blue
So many of my earliest memories of football were commentated on by this man. A legend in his arena and a great patron of our wonderful game. RIP Motty!

The worst manager we've ever had , playing the worst football they've ever seen according to some.
chara
Not a site for frivolity with so sad postings this week...although for JM the smiling memories are a wonderful tribute. I just wanted to remember a Stamford Bridge, possibly "urban type", Legend/Myth Raquel Welch passed last week and those of us of a certain age will remember her with fondness and a smile. The Legend of Ossie and Raquel was something to raise a smile and wonder at back in the day. RIP. Edited February 25, 2023 by chara

Raquel Welch certainly attended a game at Stamford Bridge, while she was at the height of her fame and indeed beauty. She was a megastar (much more intelligent and classy than the media often acknowledged) and helped to contribute to the glamour of CFC.
